Our story

In 1924, Kostas Semertzidis, the grandfather of winemaker Iordanis Michaelidis, leaves Asia Minor as a refugee and starts making wine in Kyrgia, Drama. The small family-owned winery begins to grow when Simos Michaelidis takes over and expands the Lagotopos vineyard in 1970, while laying a foundation towards the innovation of the production. The third generation, expressed through Iordanis Michaelidis, takes over in 2004 aiming at developing an advanced winery and producing high quality wines that combine current winemaking processes together with local tradition, in the best way possible. It is then when the first labels of the Domaine, Anthaleia and Melachro, are introduced.

History

A historical review

The construction of this modern winery began in 2004 in the region of Agios Athanassios in Drama, next to the largest part of the privately-owned vineyards, and was completed in 2005.

The winery includes the reception and processing area of the harvest, fermentation tanks, the ageing cellar equipped with French oak barrels, the bottling area equipped with an advanced bottling line, as well as the special area for the storage and ageing of the bottled wines.

This particular location was chosen with an aim of the quickest possible harvest transportation to the production line, something that the people of Domaine Michaelidi were able to achieve instantly.

On the same year, the winemaker and Domaine owner successfully bottles his first wines; Anthaleia made from Chardonnay – Sauvignon Blanc grapes and Melachro made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

The first varietal development of Domaine Michaelidi wines takes place three years later (2008) when after several experimental winemaking processes, the Cabernet Franc variety is added in Melachro thus creating a new experience and a new label: Pyli Red.

In 2011, it is time for Anthaleia to change and blend with another variety, the Assyrtiko grape. This new wine is now called Pyli White.

Meanwhile, in 2007, the varietal wines of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are brought into the bottling area of Domaine Michaelidi. This is achieved through observation and experimentation; these are exclusively made of varieties that grow in the privately-owned Lagotopos vineyard.
